OSA Volunteer Tax Assistance Program

Available February 8-March 31, 2010.

The Office of the State Auditor Volunteer Tax Assistance Program is a partnership with the IRS to provide free tax assistance to the military, state employees and the public. Our main focus has been providing assistance to families of National Guard and Reserve units in South Dakota. However, state employees and the public are welcome to call for an appointment if in the Pierre area.

Military personnel and their families

OSA-VITA volunteers specialize in providing free tax advice, tax preparation, and assistance to military members and their families.  They are trained and equipped to address military specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits and the effect of the new Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) guidelines.  Please download the OSA-VITA Tax Packet for the qualifications and procedures of the program. This is a mail-in program if you live outside of the Pierre area. Please allow 1-2 weeks for completion of the return process.

Pierre area residents and state employees

OSA-VITA volunteers are available on an appointment only schedule to help Pierre are residents and state employees. Please contact the Office of the State Auditor for more information and to schedule an appointment at (605) 773-3900.

General public outside of the Pierre area

For free assistance with filing a past or current return, a list of seasonal volunteer tax assistance sites can be obtained by clicking here. These volunteer operated tax assistance sites offer free tax return preparation, along with electronic filing at most locations. Volunteer sites are usually open only during the tax season - February thru April 15th. Eligible taxpayers may also prepare and file their tax return on-line for free through the Free File Alliance.
